Record Year for Duck Breeding

Great news…If you’re not already excited about this year’s duck season…you will be after reading this…

This year has been a record setting year for duck breeding. This is due to the last three years being the wettest since pond counts have begun. The 3.2 million ponds inventoried in the U.S. this spring were the most on record. The 4.9 million ponds in Prairie Canada were 43 percent more than the long-term average, which dates back to 1955, and brings the total pond count across the traditional survey area to 8.1 million.

The tremendous amount of water has attracted the record number of our beloved ducks. Blue-winged teal, shovelers and redheads soared to high levels, and if that’s not enough, mallard, pintail, canvasback and gadwall numbers rose substantially from 2010!

Can’t hardly wait for the season to open? Pass the time by preparing for opening day! So as you begin working on your to-do list, Ducks Unlimited has put together 7 Steps for Success to help your pre-season preparation go smoother. These tips on everything from gear to guns are sure to get you even more excited (if that’s even possible) for another season afield!

Duck Stamps

Duck Stamps (Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps) are pictorial stamps produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Although these Duck Stamps are not valid for postage they do have tremendous benefits.

Federal Duck Stamps play a huge role in wetland conservation. Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar generated by the sales of Federal Duck Stamps goes directly to purchase or lease wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Waterfowl are not the only wildlife to benefit from the sale of Federal Duck Stamps. Bird, mammal, fish, reptile, and amphibian species that rely on wetland habitats have prospered. An estimated one-third of the Nation’s endangered and threatened species find food or shelter in refuges established using Federal Duck Stamps.

People have also benefited from Duck Stamps. Hunters have places to enjoy their hunting heritage and other outdoor enthusiasts have places to hike, watch birds, and enjoy nature. These protected wetlands also help purify water supplies, store flood water, reduce soil erosion and sedimentation, and provide spawning areas for fish important to sport and commercial fishermen.

The Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated and is a highly effective way to conserve America’s natural resources.

Support conservation—buy a Duck Stamp!

Choosing the Right Gun

Helping you purchase the right gun is our specialty. When you visit us at The Range, we are able answer questions and in turn help you make the right decision. It is always advisable to purchase a gun in person, but it is becoming more common to do it online. In fact, many people purchase their guns from our website.

Knowing what to look for is essential… The main thing that we stress in the store is to make sure that the gun fits your hand and is comfortable for you to use.

It is important to actually handle the gun before purchase to get a good idea of comfort and feel.  Guns come in many shapes, sizes, and calibers. One of the first things you should consider is size. Always take into account whether or not you are going to be carrying your gun on you.

Safety First

At the range we always stress safety. We offer the NRA Basic Pistol Class, and recommend it to all beginners, as well as a great refresher for any shooters. We also have several NRA certified instructors that give private lessons in handgun as well as rifle training. We hope you will come by and take advantage of the expertise of our range officers.

See you on the range!

Please Help With Our Outdoor Glock Match!

The outdoor GSSF Ballistic Challenge is being held at River Bend Gun Club this year and we need your help!

Not only would we like for everyone to come out and shoot in the outdoor match, but we would also love for you to volunteer to be a Range Officer at the match!

The benefits of being a Range Officer for the Ballistic Challenge:

  • You will be eligible for the RO drawings that include great prizes (including 8 Glocks)
  • Thank you gifts (choose from range bags, magazines, cleaning mats, paper weights, and even a paid GSSF membership)
  • Lasting friendships that can be made while working with fellow shooters
  • A delicious BBQ lunch

If you do decide to volunteer to be a Range Officer, you will be eligible for all of the “shooter” drawings as well as the “RO only” drawings. Last year we had a RO win 2 Glocks (one was given away in the “shooter” drawing and the other was given away in the “RO only” drawing) Don’t worry, we will set aside plenty of time for the Range Officers to shoot!

Interested? Mark your calendars for July 16th and 17th.  The Range Officer blocks are divided into AM and PM shifts on both days.

For more information contact dongarmon@gmail.com or call him at 770-317-8439.

Misconceptions of Modern Sporting Rifles

AR-style rifles…Do you know what the “AR” stands for? If you guessed assault rifle, you guessed wrong. An assault rifle is fully automatic — a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.The “AR” stands for ArmaLite, the company that developed the rifle in the 1950s.

Yes, the rifles do resemble military firearms such as the M4, but the similarities are surface deep. The AR-style rifle functions like other semi-automatic sporting firearms, firing one round with each pull of the trigger. Since the 19th century, civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors, and the modern sporting rifle follows that tradition.

The NSSF is taking the necessary steps to educate sportsmen and the general public about these modern sporting rifles and the widespread misconceptions. Gun owners who want to be accurately informed on the subject can learn more at www.nssf.org/msr.

MDA Jailbird

I’m excited to share that I have been chosen as a MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) jailbird and am being “locked up!” That’s right, I’m going behind bars to help Jerry’s Kids©.  In order to be released on good behavior, I need your help to raise my “bail.”

My bail has been set at $2,400.00 which will send three local children to summer camp. If everyone I know makes a tax-deductible donation, I’ll reach my goal quickly!

Just click here to make a secure, online donation before 06/23/11. This is a fun event benefiting local individuals and families served by MDA who are affected by neuromuscular disease. I am honored to partner with MDA and help this important cause.

Bulls Eye Marksman Gun Club is happy to lend our support to this worthy organization. Thank you in advance for your help… Together we’ll make a difference!

Take Care of your Hearing

Shooters and Hunters are exposed to some of the loudest, most dangerous noises anywhere in the world. A single gunshot can cause permanent hearing damage. Even small caliber weapons such as a .22 create dangerous noise levels. Once your hearing is damaged, it can never be repaired.

That is why it is important to take care of your hearing. Always wear hearing protection at the range or while hunting! There are several uniquely designed hearing protection products on the market today. These products give shooters the best of both worlds: Instantaneous protection from dangerous noise, along with distortion free amplification of low level sounds such as range commands and conversation.

Here are some decibel level examples to put things in perspective

60 decibels: Normal conversation range
85 decibels: Possible hearing damage (hearing protection required by OSHA)
120 decibels: Rock concert
140 decibels: Immediate physical damage
170 decibels: Gunshot

Going to a shooting range or hunting in the great outdoors can be a time of fun and excitement. Keep it that way by protecting your hearing… It is never too late!
